“To drift is to attempt analysis of the totality of everyday life by passively moving through space”. – Guy Debord

To partake in the full body exercise of drifting requires a long walk from neighborhood to neighborhood with no regard for mental or cultural biases. In other words: you gotta walk around without spending money while paying absolutely zero attention to where you are going. This is a time worn tradition for the stoking of creative flames and makes for a good excuse to get away from the dull, punishing light that emanates from your computer screen. We suggest bringing a camera with you to capture what you see. However, we’re not sure if Guy Debord would approve this accessory. Are there any armchair situationists reading who would know?

The San Diego Ad Club asked Shilo and WMIG to create a campaign to recruit fellow creatives to enter the 2010 ADDY competition. The ADDYs are the advertising industry’s biggest showdown and a place for trade peers to bum-rush for the title of brilliance in a Creative Director pile up. But since the event is never set in the American Gladiator arena (as one would hope), imagine a little less spandex and more a display of creative prowess.

Now on display are three portraits of tortured “creatives” in a behind-the-scenes look of self mutilation for the sake of their artistic endeavors. Cause let’s be real, sometimes we take ourselves way too seriously. We pay homage to the real tortured artists Van Gogh, Steven Sagmeister and Chris Burden and we inspire agencies to get the recognition they deserve for all of their hard work. So please, take a peek of the “Don’t Torture Yourself For Nothing” campaign.

A couple months ago, We Make It Good took a long, hard look into the swirling vortex of the internet kingdom and as we stood there staring at our naked body, collectively twisting our giant mustache, we asked ourselves some questions about our place in it all. These achingly beautiful moments of introspection gave birth to WMIG TV: a place for us to showcase some of the stuff we’ve been working on outside of the laptop. Epic parties, giant phones, variety shows, bike riding, Austin, Texas, Buenos Aires, and so.. so.. so much more have all been captured for us to periodically post in this new section of wemakeitgood.com. Some of it is fun, some serious, some stupid, some are moments of staggering genius (just kidding) but by and by we were like “We refuse to let all this tapping on the keyboard stop us from living life, man.” So, we went out to live it up. It was fun. Check it out.

Click here to view the embedded video.

If you were walking around Soho a few months ago you couldn’t be blamed for thinking there was a new phone company in town. But in actuality, it was just us setting up our ginormous phonebooth. We challenged ourselves to create a week long installation in a Manhattan storefront based on the theme of communication. We chose to illustrate this theme with a good old fashioned telephone. A device that instills quaint feelings of nostalgia in all of us at WMIG and illustrates the most effective way to communicate a message: words delivered from one human being to another.

PHONE AND PHONEBOOTH UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

As we developed the concept, we devised numerous methods to get our message out. One of them being to plaster thousands of posters all over lower manhattan that showed a faceless man holding a piece of paper with a phone number on it. The simplicity of the image of course belied it’s complexity and was intriguing enough to result in thousands of phone calls as the installation ran through the week. Each phone call was greeted with a voice message giving directions to the We Make It Good Phonebooth and resulting in over 1,000 visitors during our one week run.

OUR POSTER CAMPAIGN.

OUR CLOSING PARTY WITH FADER MAGAZINE.

At the close of our brief installation we threw a party with our friends from FADER Magazine which was nothing less than a fantastical mystery tour of Bud Select, LA Rap, Karl Lagerfeld and flashing lights. And that was it. Poof. We were gone so quick it was like we were never there, which is the reason we made this little post and film. It’s short and sweet and gives you a little glimpse into a day at our studio. And if you have been wondering what We Make It Good is exactly….well…we are message makers. We construct very simple and sometimes elegant messages for ourselves and others. Keep tuning back in to WMIG TV to see other messages that we have crafted for Samantha Pleet, Discofunbath, Chari & Co. and many many more. And don’t forget to call us sometime, cause we should hang out : 888 WMIG 666.

Love,
WMIG

Back in March, FADER Magazine kindly asked us to curate the Saturday DJ lineup at the Levi’s / FADER Fort during SXSW in Austin, TX. We cobbled together a ragtag group of ruffians who’d released mixes for the absolutely fantastical mix series that FADER and WMIG produce together. Alex XXXChange, Pretty Titty, Blaqstarr, Chris Devlin, Paul Devro, and DJ Sega all threw it in a hot bbq’ed blender of free booze and sunshine to churn out these little moments of glistening beauty. Here’s a little video recap. Check it out!!!

To spread the word about the We Make It Good Phonebooth we designed, printed, and pasted a thousand posters all over downtown Manhattan. If you listen closely to the audio that is playing over the film you’ll hear the message that callers were greeted with after dialing 888 WMIG 666. This phone number will be in constant use and is always a good way to find out what we are up to. We suggest putting it in your phonebook.

She spends her days shopping her butt off, drinking vanilla lattes and traveling through every New York City nook, giving her a unique view of fashion and trends that the average walk down the street might not yield.
You may have guessed by now that we are slightly fixated with Karl Lagerfeld. Ever since his impersonator showed up at our Phonebooth party we’ve been trying to work out the meaning behind his leathery visage making subtle cameos in all our work. It’s similar to the self-referential theme that had Hitchcock standing in to pump gas or make change in all of his films, except that would only truly make sense if we actually WERE Karl Lagerfeld. Are we? Is he the man behind it all? Pushing buttons? signing checks? Does he fund We Make It Good? He did famously say that if he weren’t a fashion designer then he would be in advertising. Are we in advertising? Are we making art and calling it advertising? We have no answers for these questions as of yet but keep checking back to see if we’ve gotten any closer to working it out.

WMIG and Samantha Pleet have been toiling long and hard to finish up the new lookbook for the Samantha Pleet Holiday Collection and it is finally here! Pleet TV, in all it’s disheveled glory, is our take on a clothing line’s video lookbook. Part TV Party, part Wayne’s World, and part Muppet Show; we smashed all of these glorious things together to create a rough cut fly by the seat of your pants tv show style lookbook that presents Samantha’s new holiday collection in a hilariously unscripted public access cable kind of setting. We built the set in an abandoned warehouse, set up one 16mm camera and 2 HD video cameras then unleashed the Pleet family to drink champagne, dance, sing, tap dance, and make us laugh all while wearing the charming wares of Samantha Pleet. With cameos from a host of familiar faces like the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Carlen Altman, and Au Revoir Simone it’s quite a unique snapshot of Samantha Pleet and all her amazing friends. Viva la PLEET TV!!!!
