Musical genius, tortured artist, and tragic AIDS victim Arthur Russell is the subject of Matt Wolf’s new documentary film, Wild Combination. Russell was the writer of disco hits “Is It All Over My Face” and “Kiss Me Again” amongst countless others created under numerous pseudonyms who later in life created some of the most original and shockingly beautiful compositions of the post disco era most times with just his voice and cello to accompany him. He died tragically at the age of 40 due to complications from the AIDS virus.
With the rising popularity of artists such as Animal Collective, the Ruby Suns, and countless others who are audibly influenced by Arthur the time is perfect for a documentary taking a look at his life. Unfortunately, it seems like the director has run out of funding and is either unable to complete the film or unable to secure a distribution deal. So, for now all that exists is a trailer floating around on youtube and a website dedicated to the project. Both are linked below along with an mp3 that catches him right in the middle of his transition from disco to otherworldly unclassifiable cello-music.
