Morgan Geist – of Metro Area / Environ / Unclassics fame – dug deep into the recesses of what must be a record collection the size of a mountain to weave together this dustily beautified journey through abandoned early 80s NY. Geist’s selection of late 70s / early 80s electronic tracks exquisitely captures a moment in time when the prevailing disco sheen hanging hazily over the city was being overtaken by the throbbing pulse of murder, drugs, and dirt that ran a heavy current underneath. All in all it’s a mix that captures a certain brand of austere beauty. If that all sounds a little too ‘grown’, we’re almost 100% positive that Mr. Geist threw in some chopped and screwed Arthur Russell for the new jacks towards the very end.

“Barry’s Apartment”

This little mix is obviously inspired by the original Cosmic DJs (Baldelli) and innovative DJs of (or nearer to) my own generation, like DJ Harvey and Daniel Wang. I made sure to include some records that I thought I “discovered” on my own, only to hear them played by other (better) DJs who probably knew about them a lot longer than I did. Parallel evolution is a bitch, but I didn’t want to abandon these beloved tracks just because they were “marked” by another DJ. For example, most DJs who know the Transfer Station Blue track associate it with Sarcastic Disco, the infamous and beautiful Harvey mix – yet I believe I got my first copy of it from my departed friend, Barry Lederer, and associate it with digging and listening and learning in his dusty old apartment on 24th Street in Manhattan. I find Harvey inspirational, but don’t want my own Barry-nostalgia supplanted. I realize it sounds corny, but sometimes you have to reclaim music that is important to you, and that’s what a lot of this mix is about for me. – Morgan Geist (Environ, Unclassics, Metro Area)

If you are a one legged zombie dragging yourself through the jungle with a boombox strapped to your back, trying to get to the next latin oldies party at the bottom of a waterfall, then this mix is for you. Paul has been a dear friend of WMIG for a long time and we have too many stories involving werewolf masks, rabbit tacos, Andy Milonakis, breaking into pools at 5am, and late checkouts to fit into this post, so we’ll let the zombie anthem speak for itself. Little bit of Salem, little bit of Kelis, little bit of Mad Decent faves, Major Lazer; it’s all here just in time to sweat it out for summer!

“I tried to make this mix different from most of the mixtapes that i receive from people. I tried to not make it about new niche genres, super exclusive mp3s or even themed. I just put together a bunch of songs that i have always liked and that I wanted to share. There’s a bit of everything in here and i tried not to go too over board on the weird dial. Anyways, I like this mix, maybe a bit too many sirens but its 8am and i’m too tired to take them out. Hope you enjoy!” – Paul Devro

TRKLST:

1.EDDIE KENDRICKS- “My People…Hold On”
This is the title track off Kendricks’ best post-Temptations solo album (other tracks include “Girl You Need A Change Of Mind” and “Date In The Rain”). Pretty much a flawless soul record of the era incorporating romance, sweat, radicalism, psychedelic-ism and just a hint of ruffled-cuff shmaltz. This track in particular resonated with me in the weeks leading up to President Obama’s victory….yessssss!

2.HERMAN’S ROCKET-”Disco Woman”
A strange gem (of many) found in the basement of Brooklyn’s legendary vinyl graveyard The Thing. The flipside is also entitled “Disco Woman” though it sounds like a much more straightforward cosmic funk endeavor with great Labelle-esque vocals. I imagine this track was a playful attempt at cashing in on space alien mania surrounding “E.T.” and “Star Wars”….and hey, there’s a theremin in the corner of the studio. Why don’t we use that for something?

3.KID CREOLE & THE COCONUTS-”Adnaloy”
Yes, it’s backwards! At least most of it is another Coconuts track called “Yolanda” flip and scrambled, with Kid throwing fresh (forwardly) vocals on top. Total NYC downtown 80’s mayhem ensues! Guaranteed dance floor clearer!

4.ADRIANO CELENTANOS-”Prisencolinensinainciusol” (Greg Wilson edit)
This is a mysterious track that I had little insight into until I looked it up on the Picadilly Records site. Apparently Mr. Celentanos is Italian, though I’m convinced he and his minions are chanting in some kind of Cockney/Esperanto/Pig Latin dialect of their own invention. I love the mix of drone and hoe-down pushing it to the outer limits of what could be called disco.

5.LITTLE WALTER-”Mellow Down Easy”
The hoe-down drone continues…Little Walter (now being touted as the Tupac of his day) reminds the sweating, grinding, bopping speakeasy patrons to keep it copacetic before somebody gets hurt. Then he whips them into a life-threatening frenzy with his serrated harmonica.

6.THE DIRTBOMBS-”Kung Fu”
Former Gorie, Mick Collins leads his new band through this appropriately fuzzed-out/dubbed-out version of the Curtis Mayfield single (another movie cash-in from the days of “Enter The Dragon” and “Black Belt Jones”??). This is from their album “Ultraglide In Black” on which they do raw garage covers of classic R & B songs from the 60’s and 70’s. Finally, an effective marriage of snot and soul….

7.CLOUD-”Learn To Fly”
I’m not sure about the original artist on this one, but it was part of the re-edit series by Cloud. Sounds like Heart slipping into a bathtub full of absinthe with Norman Whitfield.

8.WIGHT LIGHT ORCHESTRA-”Chaos & Consciousness”
Max Brennan’s return from spiritual upheaval/enlightenment on the mountain. Great for those who enjoy meditation background music with lots of popping bass, or conversely or house party hedonists who need a time out.

9.FREDDIE MAS-”Detail Of A Detail”
NYC’s unsung hero. A one-man tornado of rhythm, sweetness, bodily harm and good taste. A staple of my life pretty much since I moved to the city and a continual inspiration. He is threatening to discontinue the Freddie Mas franchise in favor of new, out-outer musical mindfucks. This track is a relatively subdued FM, tamed by the calculating hand of Champion Soul. I secretly want to keep Mr. Mas alive so more people can catch up to what I’ve been raving about for years.

10.UNKNOWN ARTIST-”Robotwerke” (Futurist Edit)
A nice warm buzzing feeling permeates this track amidst all the pounding robotic coldness. Proof that electronics can breathe, or at least wheeze.

11.CAMEO-”I Just Want To Be”
My stereo was acting weird while I made this mix and transformed this track into a stripped-down mono version, reducing it to mostly drums and vocals. I wanted to end the mix on an up note and this song typifies the fun style of funk I call “peanut butter”. Lots of bouncing bass, tickling guitars, goofy voices and an implicit wetness to the proceedings. There is some tie-in with the post-election euphoria and Obama’s willingness to “be [the American people's] honeybee if you want [him] to be”, but I haven’t quite put my finger on it.

Sounding like a psychedelic spaceship mixed with “There’s a Riot Goin On” era Sly Stone, our new We Make It Good mix is a sick, twisted, glimpse into the mouth of madness that is Blaqstarr. Crafted from the confines of his illustrious Baltimore bunker he’s created more of a radio broadcast than a mixtape. Odd pauses, stops, starts all hauntingly crooned over by a true maniac.

The Gaslamp Killer sign, seals, and delivers installment number 5 of our We Make It Good Mix series. Made up of weird world psych, hip hop and grunge chopped up seamlessly and then perfectly adhesed to a tough as nails skeleton of chest thumping kick drums, machine gun snares, and deafening bass drops; this is quite different from what we have put out thus far and could only come from the deeply murky mental environs of San Diego’s mostly cloudy turntable destroyer. Click below for a tracklist and a brief explanation from the Killer himself.

Alex XXXChange, mad genius and moustache twister behind Spankrock’s Yoyoyoyoyo, has created an amazingly selected mix of film scores and other movie related sounds for the 4th installment of our We Make It Good Mix series. More of a conceptual compilation than a full blown DJ mix, Alex’s contribution is a methodically plotted journey across the cinematic map from Bollywood to Beetlejuice with plenty of Repo Man swirling around for extra texture. Download to your iSomething, take it for a walk, soak-in the Lattice Of Coincidence, and keep your eyes peeled for the always elusive shrimp plate.

7. Tangerine Dream – Love on a Real Train

Most memorably featured in 1983’s “Risky Business” but also appeared recently in “the Squid and the Whale”(2005)

“Short Eyes” Original Soundtrack (1977)

16. “Blush Response” Interlude (Blade Runner 1982)

Originally Composed by Mr. Hammer for the tv series “Miami Vice” in 1987

20. Air – Alone in Kyoto

I suspect this was actually composed for the 2003 Sofia Coppola film “Lost in Translation,” then later released on their 2004 “Talkie Walkie” LP. been wrong
before though!

Coffee and Cigarettes

22. The Greenehornes ft. Holly Golightly – There is an End
I felt obligated to include at least one song from a Jim Jarmush Movie on this mix. “I Put a Spell On You” (stranger than Paradise) seemed like it might be too obvious so I chose, instead this wonderful song from “Broken Flowers” (2005)

We Make It Good Mix Numero 3 comes from UK club juggernaut, Graeme Sinden. Pretty much the kiss-the-ring-godfather of the current UK club scene and probably the busiest man on earth with his unbelievable catalog of remixes, collaborations with Herve & Switch, KISS radio show, Fabric residency, Counterfeet record label, and endless tour after tour; we are truly honored that he made the time in his busy schedule to mix it up for our beloved series. As much a preview of what will have dancefloors throbbing for the next 6 months as it is a testament to Sinden’s uncanny ability to sniff out a club anthem before anyone else; this mix comes charging out of the gates with what’s-newer-than-new dubplates from all over the map as well as some exclusives from the man himself. An epic listen from beginning to end and not a single one of these songs has been released yet. Enjoy!

It was always going to be hard to compete with the 2 previous DJ mixes in the series (large up Pretty Titty, Chris Devlin) but i managed to surpass them (haha jokes!). Nah serious that’s too bold a claim, but I am happy with how it turned out. Its a fair representation of some of the jams i’m playing in my club sets right now. And the mix is very ‘right now’. As I write this, none of the tracks have been released yet. Not that I just play dubs, mind. I draw loads of old and familiar tunes, too, because that would be dumb and who cares how exclusive you are anyhow. I really wanted the mix to be a kinda preview to a whole bunch of stuff to get excited about in the forthcoming months. It was a good place to air some new productions fresh out the HD (machines dont care, the count and sinden) and big up a few new cats too (rude kid, detboi, mujava). Enjoy!

This is the second mix in our ongoing series featuring international man of good fortune, Chris Devlin. When he is not touring the world backing up Naeem “Spankrock” Juwan with his dj partner Ronald James Darko then he is most likely hanging out with his wonderful lady Ariel in the pastoral landscapes of Jamaica Plain, Boston. A Baltimore native, truly dear friend of mine, and absolutely amazing musician; Mr. Devlin has astounded me yet again with a mix of found field recordings, classic disco, original production, and lots of hammering and drilling noises. Definitely an amazing listen, kind of like if Animal Collective were DJs instead of a weirdo, hippy, hobbit family.

Chris Devlin

Make it Good Volume 2….is pretty weird.

…not a dj mix in the live sense, but yea I am a DJ and i mixed/edited all these songs and sound bytes together. I started with the basic format for a mix, other peoples music. Not satisfied with that, I put in some original material I have made or collaborated on, and did some edits of older songs in an attempt to re-introduce them. Throughout the mix there are sound pieces, found, recorded, and downloaded to (hopefully) make the mix layered and rich enough for more than one listen. There are a lot of construction sounds and work sounds here…I think it makes sense with the We Make It Good title.

Mixes I listened to before this which influenced this project were: Beyond The Wizard Sleeve – Erol Alken, Megamix 3 – Bladerunners, Live@home 3 – Mike2600king, Grown Mix-Zebo,We Make It good vol.1 – Pretty Titty, and a whole lot of National Public Radio…NPR mix coming someday.(so is that pledge check.)

So make breakfast or go running or go to work, give this thing at least one headphone listen though…thats how i did the “final mix”…in crappy headphones!

Track list..

1)Make it Good radio intro – Devlin

samples put together for a simulated “indecisive radio listener”

2) Get out my life woman – Solomon Burke

classic break.great lyrics.

3) Mixintro – Devlin

The above track chopped up and edited into a new drum pattern, with a little synth bass line and the begining of the A side of the 7” Wonder Woman, the return of Brunhilde ( who happens to be some kind of crazy German trying to install the 4th riech)…of of of.

4)The Boules Experiment – Alan Parsons

This little fucked up track is amazing. There is a game in France where you bang these balls together and apparently Eric Wolfson of The APP liked the sound of this. They ended up putting this weird outtake on the Album…

5) I wouldn’t want to be like you – Alan Parsons Project

Single off “I Robot” which was a favorite of mine last summer. I think this song is pretty funky and the gentle “fuck you” chorus is nice. Alan Parsons engineered Dark Side of The Moon, The making of that album is out on DVD and for a novice in production like me, it is amazing. I robotaint bad either!

.. There is a sprinkle of Draculas Wedding by Andre 3000 at the guitar break of the above song. The love Below (2003) was so cool. Andre just airing himself out and it was so good. This track was awesome and when alexxx Change heard it for the first time this year he said, “oh he was doin that bloghouse bass back then”

6) Shake it to the Ground(chinco sonido psych cumbia beat)- blackstar&RyeRye

So The guy who did the first installment of this mix jacked this song from me, and the sonny Pitchbull too. After this betrayal, I promised I would sprinkle these songs throughout, with out actually playing them.

…Alan Parsons and David Gilmour dialouge from The Making of Dark Side of the moon

7)Pass the Calabash – Margaret Singana

Phil had this to say…“Her surname’s spelt Mcingana by the way, although everyone says Singana. She did the title track for the Shaka Zulu movie (‘we are rising’ or something – stirring shit seeing Zulus kill tons of Brits with that song playing), and back in our bad old racially segregated apartheid days she was the first black person to feature on Radio 5’s top 10 (supposed to be whites only station pre-1994). She’s a legend” ….Thanks Phil!

..I edited the arrangement of the track and added a bunch of sound bytes that are about work. I watched the Dave Chapel where he was on Donahue while I was doing this too.

Blind (Devlin Remix) – Hercules and Love affair

So is it an edit or a remix?..I don’t know. This is along the same lines as the intro with the reconfiguration of a drum pattern and the addition of a bass line. I like this little sloppy mix and, I thought it fit the idea of building / construction/ making. The lyrics are far out too.

— a piece of audio called click- Ipi ‘N Tombi is layed over the begining as well its on the compalation, Zulu Indestructable beats.

9) Shake it – Fully Fitted

This track was is on the upcoming Fully Fitted EP due out really soon. Production Credits go to XXXcHangE, Darko, and myself. It samples Rye Rye’s vocals, It’s pretty cool I think. I sent it over to the Bladerunners, Razor chopped it up, and they did a sick little edit. I put that in here as well… Sorry dudes! time was tight and i couldnt find MY razor!!!

10) Shake it (Bladerunners edit) – Fully Fitted

11) I want your Love (Todd Terje edit) – Chic

Groovy ass song. Either you want to play all 6 mins of it or you want to play it with the Moody Man. Zack, Neight100… What time is it?

12) 300,000,000 Synths (Devlin roktapause edit) – Chaz Jankel

Went to the record store with some guys that know records recently. I grabbed this 12” and was like wow, great title. Beyondah then told me that it was good too. So i bought it, its awesome. I did this litlte scratch/rocktapause edit and threw in some drums as well.

13) Breakfast – Le Le

hola,hola,hola…..

14) Roll The Joint (Joey Negro edit) – Master Dance and Boogie

This is what we should be dancing to

15) Pass The Joint – Rick James

When I first let Pase and Naeem hear this song they were as hooked as i was. Funky as hell, it sounds like Dave Chapelle on the vocals. Rick James was apparently funny and amazing.

16) Brothers on the Slide (ruffy tuffy mix) – Cymande

I am a sucker for this song and always blend it with the next one..

17) 100 million – XXXchange

We had been working on a lot of stuff for this Ep and when we all went home Alexxx Change made this..What a jerk.

18) New Day – Fully Fitted

also on the forthcoming Fully Fitted EP, featuring Tyler Pope on Guitar.

19) Beautiful Nightmare (Devlin’s brunhilde Edit) – Beyonce

Tired of mixing uptempo crazy records in my living room i decided it was time for a return to the psychedelic. the ambient recordings are from a mic i hooked up and sat on my kitchen window. 3 floors up.

20) Plane Ride – Devlin

I made most of this track and then listened to the new Animal collective EP. I changed the track a bit , and then used Seal Eyeing and Cobwebs for sample material..I lso used This record from the 70s about Virgos….

..In the end when it sounds like two people having sex, its really two pieces by the Language Removal Services. One is Marcel Duchamp (language removal), and the other is Marilyn Monroe (language removal),

21) A Day in The Life -The Beatles

…

22) Buenos Matrimonios Ahi Afuera -El Guincho

This guy is awesome. Google and buy.
