Chris Cunningham Photographs Grace Jones
Chris Cunningham gives fashion / music icon Grace Jones the Rubber Johnny treatment for the newest issue of British publication Dazed & Confused. What might initially seem like a bizarre pairing flows quite impressively from the ink jets to the page in this “anti-fashion” shoot, making for a portrayal of Jones unlike any seen before. Presented as a collaboration between the two artists, the twisted results come across a little more like Chris Cunningham microwaving Grace Jones’ stem cells with a digital heat lamp.
Flipping through the spread, the strikingly simple portraits begin to twist and turn as the pop star starts to assume more hauntingly contorted poses for the filmmaker to digitally morph. By the end you are left with nubian piles of human meat all shot against beautifully simple backdrops which create the perfect frame for what seems to be a genetic art installation. Wow.
